Multiple Californina Hardwood Records Obliterated

Zane Moore (and father Steve) of the San Jose area reports multiple new tall tree discoveries in the area using a laser and digital inclinometer. Mike Hanuschick, Assistant Big Trees Coordinator for California, has verified most of Zane's discoveries with a Trupulse200. In most cases his measurements were slightly conservative. Last week while Zane and Mike were verifying one of Zane's tall eucalyptus discoveries, they spied another towering top in the distance and found a eucalyptus globulus that approaches the old Northern hemishpere record. Some of these heights are almost shocking, with the old record for one tree being broken by over 50 feet !

Here are the new records:

California Bay Laurel - 160.0'
Tanoak - 160.4'
California Sycamore - 178.5'
Eucalyptus(globulus) - 240.0'

New Tall Sugar Pine Discovery 10-17-2011

The height of the tallest pine was officially announced at 268' on the nose but the following day it was confirmed that a radio communication error resulted in the ground level measurement being .25 ft on the low side. I used 268.5 ft for the low point of ground level, but in fact it should have been 268.75 ft. This increased the height from 268.04 ft to 268.29 ft. The offical height of "Phalanx" is now 268.29 ft and it has been confirmed by climber deployed tape-line.
